The Ghosts of Catalina Island
Haunted Catalina Island, California: A Paranormal Escape
Catalina Island, just a short ferry ride from Long Beach, isn’t just a sun-soaked paradise; it’s also a hotbed for paranormal enthusiasts. With its rich history, this charming island offers an eerie allure perfect for those intrigued by the supernatural. The island was initially claimed for the Spanish crown but later handed over to Mexico….and then the USA.
Getting to Catalina Island requires a ferry ride which, during my trip in November 2024, was approximately $90 per person round trip. It can taken from either Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point. The ferry is quite comfortable and even has a drinks and snacks available for purchase on the 1-hour ride. This trip to Catalina Island was part of a bigger trip that included a stay on the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
The ferry is a comfortable ride.
There’s plenty of space on the ferry.
I felt very safe while visiting Catalina Island but, of course, common sense will serve you well when walking around at night. The locals were very friendly and happy to assist with directions or restaurant recommendations. There is plenty to do including whale watching tours and even bison tours. Yes, BISON! Around a dozen bison were brought to Catalina Island in the 1920's for a film project and they have remained ever since. The herd is now around 100 bison, and they are cared for by the Catalina Island Conservancy. If you need help with tours around Catalina Island, click HERE for a list of great options!
Getting Around
You don’t need a car to get around unless you plan on venturing far out from Avalon. I did not have a car but I noticed many traveled via golf carts. I opted to walk everywhere since the weather was nice and I wanted the exercise. The hotels that I noticed on my walks were close to pretty to much anything you might want do, see, or eat. There were plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance including a Vons grocery store.
There are plenty of shops and restaurants to choose from.
I enjoyed beautiful sunsets while on Catalina Island.

The Wrigley Memorial, paying tribute to the island's influential chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., is rumored to be haunted by his spirit. Visitors often report feeling an inexplicable chill or catching glimpses of a shadowy figure observing them from the memorial. 2. The Curse of the Casino
Not just a hub of entertainment, the Catalina Casino has its fair share of ghostly tales. Hauntings seem to be focused on the Mezzanine level, specifically the women’s restroom on the building’s west side. A woman in white is seen silently wandering the floor and is sometimes seen entering the women’s bathroom. A man is also seen wearing, clothing not from this time period, carrying a camera with him. It’s said that a young woman, who tragically drowned nearby, haunts the halls of the Casino, searching for her lost love. There are plenty of reports of strange sounds, flickering lights, and the inexplicable feeling of being watched by an unseen presence.

4. Hotel Mac Rae
Built in the 1920s, this lovely hotel has a rich history intertwined with the island's past. Once a thriving spot for vacationers, it slowly became famous for its supernatural occurrences. Legend has it that the hotel is haunted by the spirit of a former guest, a mysterious woman who roamed the halls during the night in search of something lost. Some associates her with the tragic shipwreck off the coast in the 1920s, adding a layer of historical intrigue to the already fascinating hotel.
My room was quite comfortable BUT please be aware that you will have to walk up those stairs to get to the check-in desk and your room. They offer various snacks and drinks (i.e. teas and hot chocolate) and a continental breakfast.
